A Buzz of Activity at Basket Central
From August through October, Basket Central gets busy!

Basket Central is the workspace where Dance for the Cure’s Basket Genies create more than 200 themed raffle baskets for Ribbons of Hope, DFC’s annual fundraiser. The Genies are the volunteers who dream up the themes, pull the pieces together and turn donated items into the finished baskets guests see at the event.
A few years ago, the job started getting bigger. By 2024, the number of baskets had grown, the themes had become more elaborate, and the Genies could clearly use a few extra hands. That was the beginning of the Helper Bees.
There were only a few that first year. The next year there were six. This year, more than 15 Helper Bees are helping keep Basket Central moving.

Over time, the Bees and Genies have worked out a system that saves everyone time. Each Genie puts Post-it notes on the wall under her name listing the types of items she needs.
The Helper Bees search through the inventory, pull anything that might work, and place it in the Genie’s bin. When the Genie arrives, she checks the bin and can get started right away. Anything she decides not to use goes into another bin for the Bees to return to stock.
The Helper Bees also do plenty of the work that keeps the whole operation from getting bogged down. They organize inventory, spray-paint items, shrink-wrap finished baskets, suggest themes, hunt for just the right piece and help request donations when something is still missing. They also empty the trash, take out recycling and sweep the floor. Keeping Basket Central neat and orderly matters when so many people are working in one space, and it gives the Basket Genies the breathing space to think and create.
Some jobs are easier than others. Glue dots develop attachments. Styrofoam gets everywhere. Wrapping paper sometimes takes two people. Wooden dowels occasionally need persuasion. Shrink wrap has a personality all its own.

Most days, Basket Central is a mix of hunting, sorting, building, wrapping and figuring things out as everyone goes along. The system keeps improving, the baskets keep coming together, and the Helper Bees keep the Genies supplied with what they need to keep creating.
Basket Central opens in August, and for roughly the next ten weeks, the work is constant. Every basket has to be completed early enough to be cataloged, described and included in the Ribbons of Hope program booklet. There is always something to find, sort, build, wrap or finish. With the Helper Bees now part of the process, though, constant no longer means frantic. The work keeps moving, the Genies can stay focused on creating, and Basket Central hums along all the way to the finish line.
