Volunteer Spotlight: Lisa Sabo

Some volunteers find Dance for the Cure through a friend, a local event, or a moment that connects them to the mission in a lasting way. For Lisa Sabo, that moment came during a deeply personal chapter in her life, and it continues to shape the way she shows up for others today.

Lisa first connected with Dance for the Cure after attending Ribbons of Hope in 2023, where she was invited as a guest by co-founder Joanne Liscovitz following Lisa’s breast cancer diagnosis and recovery in 2022. That evening opened the door to a deeper understanding of how this community supports local patients facing financial challenges during treatment. Dance for the Cure has gifted over $1.4 million to individuals in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, and Somerset counties, all through the dedication of a 100% volunteer-run organization.

That impact stayed with Lisa.

“The commitment to helping women in need hit home really hard given my breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery journey,” she shared. “I knew it was something I absolutely had to become part of.”

Since then, Lisa has stepped into volunteer roles with a sense of purpose and openness. She began by helping assemble and distribute Tie the Town Pink boxes, then joined the Pink Bow Project, where she found joy in both the creativity and the connections it brings.

“I actually find it fun making the bows,” Lisa said. “I recruited my daughter, Jules, to help. She’s crafty and we make bows and distribute together.”

That experience reflects what so many volunteers discover—meaningful work paired with moments of connection. Lisa also values the opportunity to meet fellow small business owners while out in the community, adding another layer to her involvement.

Her path with Dance for the Cure has continued to grow. Today, Lisa contributes her time across several areas, including the Pink Ribbon Tribute team, the DFC Media Team, and as a Helper Bee at Basket Central, where more than 200 basket masterpieces are created each year for the organization’s annual fundraiser.

DFC co-founder, Joanne Liscovitz shared, “Lisa first came into my life as a real estate client, and she continues to inspire me as a breast cancer survivor and dedicated volunteer. She gives back with so much heart, and we are so grateful to have her on our team. It’s especially meaningful to see her daughter Jules getting involved as well.”

Lisa’s connection to the mission is rooted in lived experience. She speaks openly about the support she received throughout her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, and how that support continues to shape her perspective.

“It took a village, and I’m thankful I had an amazing one,” she shared. “Not everyone has that village, and when they need help, DFC is there for women.”

That understanding fuels her commitment. Each bow assembled, post shared, and conversation started becomes part of a larger effort to ensure local patients feel supported during a difficult time.

Lynn Grillo, DFC Media Director, appreciates Lisa’s can-do spirit: “Lisa recently joined the DFC Media Team and now manages some of our social media posts. She is efficient, thorough, and a big asset on our small but mighty team!”

Lisa continues to look for ways to contribute wherever help is needed. She brings energy to every role she takes on, along with a quiet goal she carries each year—to fill a table at Ribbons of Hope and invite others into this community of giving.

Her story reflects what makes Dance for the Cure so impactful: neighbors supporting neighbors, volunteers turning compassion into action, and a shared commitment to easing the financial burden for local breast cancer patients.

If Lisa’s story speaks to you, there is always room to get involved. Every hour volunteered and every dollar raised helps provide meaningful relief to someone navigating a breast cancer diagnosis right here in our community.
