DFC receives 2023 Proclamation from Highland Park, NJ

Below is the text of the Proclamation by Mayor Elsie Foster Read at the Mayor and Council meeting Tuesday October 10, 2023

WHEREAS, October is promoted as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Susan G. Komen organization. This annual focal point for awareness and advocacy has a forty year history; and WHEREAS, as President Joe Biden noted in a proclamation for this occasion issued on September 29th: “Nearly 300,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and one in eight women in America will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetimes.”; and

WHEREAS, as Minnesota Governor Tim Walz notes in a proclamation for this occasion: “American Indian and Black women have the highest mortality rates from breast cancer, followed by white women” and “Black women are often diagnosed at later stages when treatments are limited or costly, and the prognosis is poor”; and

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society continues to advise women to get an annual mammogram screening once they reach the age of 40; and

WHEREAS, the Borough of Highland Park is proud to highlight the work of the Dance for the Cure organization, which is a local charity whose mission is to financially assist women impacted by breast cancer in Somerset, Hunterdon, and Middlesex Counties. The organization will hold its Ribbons of Hope 2023 event on October 19th at the Bridgewater Marriott and welcomes public support. WHEREAS, the Borough of Highland Park stands in solidarity with all the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends, neighbors and others who are battling this disease.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Elsie Foster, Mayor of the Borough of Highland Park, NJ, do hereby declare October 2023 to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Highland Park and urge residents to join in spreading awareness and advocating for more research for a cure.
